The Dream Matchup

As a boxing fan, I want to watch the best fights that can be made. The true essence of a sport is competition, tension and close battles. I was treated to two great fights between Canelo and GGG. I view GGG as the people's champion, as I thought he won both fights. It was quite the spectacle to see the two best at 160 battle it out. While the poor judging ruined the result, the more important thing is that the fight happened.

Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder is another super fight that could very well happen. A great heavyweight matchup between the best American and British heavyweights currently. Another fight that would be the true dream matchup, one that hardcore and casual fans can get excited about is Terrence Crawford vs. Vasyl Lomachenko. Some people may think this is an unreasonable matchup because they fight in different weight classes but there are plenty examples of fighters jumping up a couple weight classes for a big money fight. Manny Pacquiao moved up to fight Oscar de la Hoya. Mikey Garcia might move up to fight Errol Spence Jr, but that fight seems more unreasonable as Mikey Garcia has a different build than Spence, who looks much bigger than him. Lomachenko, 30 stands at 5'7 with a 65 inch reach. Crawford, 31 stands at 5'8 with a 74 inch reach. I believe that Lomachenko and Crawford are the best fighters currently in any weight class. They are both in their primes, around the same age and similar in height. It also helps that both fighters currently fight on ESPN as they wouldn't have to make a deal with a non-network fighter.

The question is, has anyone thought of this fight because from a pure boxing perspective it is the best fight that could be made. My hope is that this fight does happen because it would be great to watch the best fight the best. The weight of the fight would be determined after negotiations, but I imagine it being at 135-140 pounds. Crawford and Lomachenko have both fought at Lightweight in the past, so maybe that is the weight class they would go with (130-135 lbs). Crawford currently fights at 147 and Lomachenko fights at 135. I suggest they meet at 140 and make it happen. Both fighters are generational type talents and the fight would do a lot to raise the profile of both fighters to the mainstream sports fans. ESPN should have their two best fighters go against each other for the good of boxing and to find out who truly is the best pound for pound fighter in the world. This fight should happen because Lomachenko and Crawford seem to run circles around their opponents and embarrass them while rarely being challenged. It's time for them to test themselves against each other.
